A young person’s move into supported accommodation begins before they arrive at the door. This post follows the decisions, plans, contracts and people around a placement: who chooses it, what the local authority pays for, what support is agreed, and what remains in place once the move has happened.

Supported accommodation became an Ofsted-regulated category in 2023. Its history reaches through care leaving, housing and local commissioning; this post traces how those overlapping arrangements formed, and what regulation now brings into public view.

After leaving No Limits in 2022, I moved into supported accommodation to work closer to the everyday conditions shaping young people’s lives. This post traces that shift and the questions it opened about continuity, accountability and what support can offer beyond a place to stay.

From September 2021 to January 2022, I worked with No Limits in A&E at University Hospital Southampton. This post considers youth work alongside CAMHS, the limits of social prescribing in a system of waiting lists, and why the work led me towards care and housing.

When reliable internet access at home could not be assumed, Southampton’s Bargate Internet Café brought Hype Magazine, Youthnet, employment experience and informal youth work into one shared civic space.
